Troy alumnus endows RMI scholarship to help students

A risk management insurance alumnus has decided to endow a scholarship to encourage others on the same path he took.

Douglas Dick, a 2008 Troy alumnus, wants to pay forward the generosity he once received as a student.

“I’ve always had a desire to give back and feel I’ve been given a spirit of generosity,” Dick said. “Generosity and the idea of giving freely with no expectation of receiving anything in return has been a wildly rewarding and freeing realization for me.

“Sorrell College equipped me and positioned me well for early career success. I’ve seen the commitment of Troy’s staff and the positive influence those staff members have had over other fellow alums.”

The Endless Opportunities RMI Scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior on the Troy Campus pursuing a degree in risk management insurance with a 3.4 or higher GPA. The recipient must also have completed the Principals in Risk Management and Insurance course.

Dick credits his success to several Sorrell professors.

“My time spent with Troy faculty and staff was not just impactful but rewarding,” Dick said. “Dr. Duett constantly mentored me on how to ‘see the big picture,’ how to consider the importance of emotional intelligence, and how to really differentiate myself as a student and now, professional.”

Dick spoke about another faculty member who helped him start his career through an internship with Chick-Fil-A Inc.’s Atlanta-based Support Center.

“Tara Morelock is one of the most giving and dedicated mentors and friends I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing,” Dick said.

Dick also mentioned Dr. Courtney Baggett, the current department of economics, finance and risk management and insurance chair.

“She certainly raised the bar for my academic and technical skillset,” he said. “I very much appreciate Dr. Baggett for continuing to call our students into excellence.”

Dick was also a member of SGA as the vice president for Campus affairs and held various leadership positions in other campus organizations, such as Gamma Iota Sigma and Alpha Tau Omega.

“This scholarship is a charge to students to pursue excellence as it relates to academic success, student involvement and prioritizing doing the right thing in every venture,” Dick said.
