Troy community preps for annual T-Day

Updated: Aug 20

T-Day is on the horizon, and in the distance, the Sound of the South can be heard and the smell of popcorn wafts through the air. April 27 brings the highly anticipated spring football game, dubbed  “T-Day” for short, as well as other festivities.

The day kicks off with the “Lunch with Legends” event, starting at 11 a.m.  The lunch features legendary Troy football players such as Mike Turk, Willie Tullis, Jordan Chunn and Super Bowl winning kicker Lawrence Tynes. The lunch also features Coach Rick Rhoades, who led the Trojans to two Gulf South Conference Championships and an NCAA Division two national championship.

While the lunch runs until 12:30 p.m., the Troy Trojans football team is holding a kid's camp, starting at noon. The Youth Football Clinic, sponsored in part by Troy Regional Medical Center, is free for any kids wishing to participate.

Starting at 1 p.m. is the Athletics Yard Sale. The yard sale gives students and fans the opportunity to purchase official Troy University athletics apparel, such as game worn jerseys and practice gear, straight from the university. The yard sale takes place on the concourse of the football stadium and runs from 1 p.m. up until halftime of the game.

The spring football game officially kicks off at 2p.m., with admission being free for all fans. The spring game gives students the opportunity to see the new football team under brand new head coach Gerad Parker.

The game also allows fans to see new additions to the football team on both the offensive and defensive sides, such as junior wide receiver Zeriah Beason coming in from Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kansas, and senior Brendan Jackson, a linebacker coming to Troy from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

T-Day includes giving the fans the chance to see Trojan returners who look to fill bigger roles this upcoming season, with players like senior wide receiver Landon Parker, junior running back Damien Taylor and junior quarterback Goose Crowder all returning under Parker.

All five players mentioned are already making big moves in practice and are looking to bring that energy to the field for T-Day as well as the 2024 regular season.

T-Day doesn’t end with the spring football game, though. Softball takes on in-state rival South Alabama in game two of the weekend series. The game starts at 4 p.m. and admission is free for all fans as well.
