Fresh off a 51-14 rout of ULM, the Troy football team will stay at home this week and host Georgia Southern on Saturday, Nov. 14, for senior night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Trojans (3-6, 2-3 Sun Belt) have seen an upward trend over the past three weeks, blowing out two conference foes and taking the conference leader to triple overtime.
“Our guys are playing with a lot more confidence,” said Neal Brown, first-year head coach, on last week’s victory. “We got off to a quick start on Saturday, which I thought was crucial.”
In this week’s matchup against the Eagles (6-2, 4-1 Sun Belt), Troy will need to repeat that fast start. Offensive leaders like sophomore quarterback Brandon Silvers and senior running back Brandon Burks will both need to have a breakout game against an offense-oriented Georgia Southern team.
The defense will have its hands full with junior running back Matt Breida, who is averaging 144.8 yards per game, the best in the league. It will be up to the Trojans’ defensive front to fill running lanes and corral Breida, who averages over nine yards every time he gets the ball.
Also in the backfield is junior quarterback Kevin Ellison, who has the potential to wreck havoc with his feet as well as his arm. Offensive coordinator Doug Rose has a complex and highly-effective, option-based offensive scheme that has worked consistently for the Eagles.
Look for Georgia Southern to stick to its typical game plan coming into Troy.
“They spread you out and use a lot of motions, a lot of different formations, unbalanced formations and they try to get you into one on one tackling situations,” Brown said about Georgia Southern’s offense. “They’ve got some guys that can make you miss.”
Kickoff on Larry Blakeney Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
