Troy Golf Wraps up Old Waverly Collegiate Championship with 2 top 20 players

The men’s golf team wrapped up the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship with two top 20 players, Phillip Brennan and Kyle Thommesen on Tuesday.

Four individuals were taken to the tournament including Brennan and Thommsen, along with two others, Alex Barnes and Wil Clowdus both from Auburn, Ala.

“The goal was to get these guys geared up for the upcoming conference, and the Old Waverly Golf Course did not disappoint,” assistant Bart Barnes, graduate student majoring in sport and fitness management from Elba, Ala. said. “I thought it went really well with the four young men that we took with us.”

Barnes started assisting the men’s and women’s golf team in January 2010 and has been with them ever since.

Thommesen finished the tournament with scores of 71-73-78 totaling at 222.

He tied for 20th, being six-over with two birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys.

He ended being only five shots off of the lead.

Brennan ended the tournament with a 220 and shot a 70, which was two under the low round of the day.

Garner shot rounds of 77-76-77 totaling at 230.

“He had some really good plays with a couple of mistakes, but he was a little bit rusty,” Barnes said. “This was his first tournament action this spring and he’ll be in the 6th position at the conference tournament.”

This was the first tournament that senior Alex Barnes has ever competed in for the men’s golf team.

Barnes shot a 95-105-96 totaling at 296 and finishing 78th in the tournament.

He will be accepting the Clements award this semester because he has the highest GPA of all the male student athletes at Troy University.

“He’s been with us for a while and he is a great influence academically and a great leader for the team,” Bart Barnes said. “I don’t believe those scores show his ability, but it was a nice way for him to end his career with us. He really earned the right to get to go on the trip and compete.”

Barnes says this was a good confidence boost for Brennan and Thommsen before the Sun Belt Conference Championship.

He and head coach Matt Terry are looking forward to the conference championship and to see what the team can do.
