The No. 51 Troy’s men’s golf team finished sixth out of 14 teams at the Seminole Intercollegiate at the Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida.
The potential for rain on Sunday, March 13, forced a Saturday with 36 holes to play, and Troy’s two rounds yielded vastly different results. Junior Luke Moser of Waterloo, Ontario, tied a school record with a 7-under 65.
Meanwhile, the Trojans shot a school record 16-under par in the first round of a hectic Saturday.
Troy’s score of 272 was good enough to mark the second-lowest score in school history. It was the lowest on a par-72 course, as the Trojans shot a 270 at the Sun Belt Preview.
The final round was nothing like the previous. Troy shot 13-over and let a first-place spot flounder into a sixth.
Freshman Calum Masters of Headland continued his impressive form with a third-place finish overall. The Alabamian had another notable performance at the Tiger Invitational earlier in the week, finishing tied for sixth.
Masters dropped seven birdies in the final round of play to finish with a 6-under 66 after a 3-under 69 in the first round. He was also the only Trojan to finish under par for the round. The freshman had not shot under par all year, but three of his last four rounds have broken that trend.
Moser had two completely different rounds. The Canadian sank nine birdies to finish 7-under par and mark his place in Troy’s record books—his finish is tied for best ever in Troy’s school history—but in his final round, Moser shot three double-bogeys and four bogeys to finish with an 81 to fall into a tie for 25th.
Redshirt junior Cam Norman from Greenville and Clayton Vannoy of Pensacola, Florida, both shot a 3-under 69. Norman recorded six birdies and an eagle, and Vannoy finished the round with four birdies and an eagle of his own.
Norman’s finish tied him for 35th, while Vannoy’s earned him 51st place outright. The pair of eagles came in the first hole as Troy played it to a 9-under as a unit with four eagles and a birdie to boast.
Jared Bettcher, a junior from Auburn, began Saturday with a 78 and shot an 80 in the last round. Bettcher finished tied for 64th overall.
