Troy University Head Football Coach Neal Brown agreed to a new contract near the end of last spring, but the details of that contract weren’t released to the Tropolitan until last week.
Brown received his new contract coming off the heels of a historic season in Troy. After going 4-8 in his first season, the Trojans finished 2016 with a school-record 10 wins in FBS play. The six-game turnaround was among the best in the nation.
While the extension was first reported in March by the Dothan Eagle, the salary details were withheld for the time being.
Per Troy University Athletic Director Jeremy McClain, Brown’s new contract increases his base salary from $690,000 per season to $800,000.
This raise makes Brown the second-highest-paid coach in the Sun Belt behind Louisiana’s Mark Hudspeth.
“We wanted to make his salary competitive both in our conference and in the country,” McClain told the Tropolitan.
According to McClain, it is not an extension but rather a new contract. The original contract was to end in 2019, but Brown is now signed until 2021 with an option to add two more years.
Brown could opt out of that contract if he receives an offer from another program, but the terms for such a buyout are not currently known.
Brown’s bonus structure remains largely the same with just one change. He was originally receiving $15,000 per conference win, but that has been eliminated due to recent success. Now, Brown will receive $15,000 for each conference win above four, a holdover from the original contract.
In addition to Brown, several assistants also received raises. The salary increases are being funded entirely externally, meaning none of the funds are coming from the university itself.
Brown is entering his third year at the helm and will be looking to improve on last year’s performance, which ended with a Dollar General Bowl victory.
