Troy rolls Austin Peay in home opener

To kick off the 2016 season, the Troy Trojans defeated the Governors of Austin Peay by a score of 57-17 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

After the turnover on downs, the Trojans took their first possession, and on the first offensive play for Troy, junior running back Jordan Chunn took the ball up the middle for a 48-yard touchdown.

The Trojans set the tempo for this matchup early and never seemed to slow down as the game progressed. Silvers also scored a rushing touchdown on a one yard quarterback sneak at the goal line.

Chunn recorded his second career 100-plus yard game on the ground, rushing for 161 yards on 13 touches. As the game progressed, the deficit got larger, and at halftime the score was 30-14 in the Trojans’ favor.

The Trojans outscored the Governors 27-3 after the half. Troy spread the ball around to many targets, with five different players scoring a rushing touchdown. Troy controlled almost all aspects of the game, represented by their 706 yards of total offense which ranking near the top all time, compared to the 254 yards by Austin Peay.

Sophomore wide receiver Ismail Saleem had a career-high night as his four receptions went for 106 yards and one touchdown. Junior tight end James Coleman for Austin Peay collected two receiving touchdowns along with 65 yards to highlight the Governor’s offense, while sophomore linebacker Gunnar Scholato led the Austin Peay defense with 14 total tackles.

With the final seconds on the game clock ticking away, the final score stood 57-17. Troy will travel to Clemson on Saturday, Sept. 10, to take on the Tigers while Austin Peay takes on Tennessee Tech at home.
