The Troy University football team cruised to a 51-14 victory over UL-Monroe on a rainy Saturday, Nov. 7, in Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Defense was the deciding factor for the Trojans (3-6, 2-3 Sun Belt), as they forced six turnovers against the Warhawks (1-8, 0-5 Sun Belt), returning two fumbles and one interception for touchdowns. Senior corner back LaMarcus Farmer led the defense, picking off two passes, returning one 55 yards for a TD in the second quarter.
Troy started fast and never looked back, scoring the first 13 points of the game until freshman quarterback Garrett Smith put ULM on the board with a 47-yard TD pass. The two sides swapped scores, making the score 20-14 with 53 seconds left in the opening quarter.
It was the closest ULM would get to tying the game.
Troy proceeded to score 31 straight points in the contest, led by sophomore quarterback Brandon Silvers, who completed 22 of 33 passes for 326 yards and four touchdowns. Senior running back Brandon Burks was also productive, rushing for 107 yards on 19 carries and catching three passes for 89 yards.
Freshman quarterback Garrett Smith led the Warhawks on offense, completing 23 of 39 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns.
The Trojans will stay at home next week on Saturday, Nov. 14, when they take on Georgia Southern at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
