Scott Shelton The Troy football team added five players on National Signing Day last Wednesday, bringing the total number of recruits of the 2019 starting class to 22. The Trojans boast the second-best class in the Sun Belt Conference, according to 247Sports, and the third-best class in the conference, according to Rivals. “It’s been a whirlwind few weeks since our staff came on board,” head coach Chip Lindsey said. “And they did a tremendous job closing out this signing class. “We’re excited about the future of Troy Football, and these young men are going to play major roles in solidifying Troy among the premier Group of Five programs in the country.” 247Sports ranked Troy’s 2018 class as 98th nationally, but the Trojans jumped to 78th after signing day. One of the biggest signings last Wednesday was cornerback Reddy Steward. Steward is Troy’s highest-rated recruit, according to 247Sports. Steward also had offers from Southern Miss, Florida Atlantic, Memphis and Michigan. The Trojans successfully flipped place-kicker Jack Martin, whom 247Sports ranked as the 16th-best place-kicker in the country. Martin de-committed from South Alabama in late January, and he announced his intent to sign with the Trojans. On National Signing Day, the kicker from Northview High School made it official. Over the course of the offseason, Troy also has added a pair of quarterbacks to the 2019 roster. Jacob Free and Gavin Screws are the newest signal callers for Troy. Free made noise among the Trojans nation, as he comes from Vanderbilt, leaving after one year of being redshirted. Screws, an incoming freshman, played at Baldwin High School in Jacksonville, posting over 7,800 yards through the air. The Trojans also added a pair of wide receivers. Kaylon Geiger of Navarro College in Texas was among the leaders in junior college football in receptions and receiving yards. Jaden Warren is the sixth-highest-rated commit for Troy, according to 247Sports. The two add to the wide receivers already committed to the Trojans, including three-star receivers Khalil McClain and Reggie Todd. 247Sports ranks Steward and McClain as the 10th and 11th-highest-ranked commits in program history. Of junior college recruits, McClain is 247Sports’ fourth-ranked wide receiver nationally and the 50th-best player overall. Ahdarrious Gee, a three-star inside linebacker, is the 22nd-highest-rated player in program history. Javon Solomon is another three-star recruit committed to Troy. Solomon plays outside linebacker and weak-side defensive end, and he rounds out the five Trojan commits last Wednesday. Of the recruits, 11 come from the state of Alabama, six come from Georgia, four come from Florida and one comes from Texas. In addition to the recruits, Troy will also have running back Charles Strong, who is transferring from Texas A&M and was a four-star recruit last year.
