The Student Government Association’s (SGA) president, Will Thompson, has announced two executive orders to establish two separate task forces, one to form homecoming rules and the other to work with the chancellor’s fellows to bridge gaps between American and international students.
Thompson announced the decision at Tuesday’s SGA meeting, focusing on the second group and adding that he hoped to see it bring the divided groups together.
Haley Hinote will be leading the task force, whose goal is to “primarily seek to develop ideas, programs and initiatives that will incorporate the International and American student bodies.”
The other would be composed of a combined group of Greek and independent students, who will be establishing rules for next year’s homecoming competitions.
The current dress code was amended for formal and informal meetings, which began with the exclusion of flip-flops, then continued to add peep-toe heels and wedges to acceptable wear at formal meetings. It ended with denim still permissible except in the case of holes and cut-offs. These amendments to the current constitution ended after an approximately 45-minute discussion.
Sen. Montgomery also discussed a resolution for the beautification of fraternity village, which is to utilize the field in front of fraternity village by clearing the trees for activities of all university students.
Opposition to the resolution expressed concern that there was a possible frog species living in trees in the area, which would prevent the university from removing specific trees.
Sen. Smith, B., among others, however, advised senators to remember that even upon approving a resolution, the SGA can enact little without the approval of higher authorities.
The SGA also inducted four new senators: Allison Milstead, a junior communications major from Alabaster who represents the Communications and Fine Arts College; Emily Carter, a junior English and language arts education major from Hoover, is a senator at-large that represents the student body; Ngoc Vo, a freshman communication major from Da Nang, Vietnam represents Pace Hall; and Erin Fibbe, a senior nursing major from Mobile is senator at-large on the Constitution and Rules committee.
Also announced was a presidential debate that will be held in the Trojan Center Ballrooms on Monday at 6 p.m., sponsored by the Tropolitan.
SGA also approved the constitution of the Troy University Documentary Club, an organization with the purpose of broadening views of the world via documentary films.
