Troy soccer opened up the flood gates on Jackson State today, Sunday, Sept. 1, for its first home win of the young 2013 season, a 5-0 beat down.
Senior forward Cecilia Thorngren led the Trojans with her two goals and six shots in the game that was never in question.
In the 2nd minute Thorngren, assisted by Paige McMillan, found the net to give Troy an early lead and all it would need to win the game.
But the Trojans were just getting the scoring party started and Jackson State was in for a long day.
It was the 20th minute when Louise Cheng scored Troy’s second goal of the game, assisted by Georgia Wallis.
For Jackson State, the offense was nonexistent due to the work from the Trojan defenders breaking up JSU chances and the proactive job of Troy goaltender Caitlin Buono, who neutralized any threat towards the Trojan goal crease.
Necee Jennings and Abby Reynolds tallied goals in the game to make the score 4-0 Troy while McMillan finished the day with two assists to her credit.
With the game firmly in hand for the Trojans, Thorngren was not done scoring as she made the total 5-0 with her second goal of the match in the 63rd minute.
“I thought we had a lot more quality in our final third,” Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. “I think we did a good job finding ways through them as opposed to over the top of them. We weren’t forcing balls as much today as we had been in the past so our possession had a little bit of purpose today and I think if we continue to develop that it will be better, better and better.”
Troy soccer (2-2) next hits the road to play UAB this Friday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m.
