The Troy soccer team concluded its 2016 season with a 0-1 loss at the hands of South Alabama in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament on Wednesday.
The rivalry game, played in Mobile, went down to the final minutes of regulation before South Alabama’s Ashlynn Jones took full advantage of a defensive mistake along the backline. That put goalkeeper Mikki Lewis in a near-impossible one-on-one matchup.
Jones’ goal was one of seven shots the Jaguars (13-5-1, 8-3 Sun Belt) took in the second half, part of an 11-shot performance from the top-seeded team in the tournament.
The Trojans (7-10-3, 3-5-2 Sun Belt) came into the contest the heavy underdogs as the eighth-seed, but they still hung with the Jaguars on both sides of the ball for the majority of the game.
Troy also fired 11 shots, managing five on frame, but it was held scoreless thanks to four saves by Jaguars goalkeeper Justice Sanford and a team save.
The result of the rivalry matchup was par for the course with their past ten meetings, all of which have been decided by one goal.
Kierstun Edlund led a young Trojan lineup with three shots, while fellow freshman Qarli Stone shot twice.
With the loss, the Troy soccer team will now look forward to the 2017 season with an up-and-coming roster hoping to make a Sun Belt title run.
