Troy soccer opens Sun Belt action

After drawing with Georgia State at home last Wednesday, Troy Soccer lost 3-0 to the Marshall Thundering Herd Sunday afternoon.

The match against Georgia State was supposed to take place Thursday night at the Troy Soccer Complex, but it was moved to noon on Wednesday due to weather concerns. In that match, the Trojans drew with the Panthers nil all with both defenses thwarting the opposition attacks.

“A tie is a point in conference -- a point more than we had before,” said head coach Stuart Gore. “I thought for the first ten minutes we looked like the aggressors, but they looked like the best team by the end of the first half.

“We made up for a few of our mistakes, but we still didn’t get enough shots off.”

After the end of the first half the sky fell out, causing over an hour-long delay at halftime before the match was eventually resumed.

“When I put my head out the door, where you couldn’t see three feet in front of your face, I was like ‘this is never going to happen,’” said Gore. “But the field does a great job, it drained really well.”

Trojan goalkeeper Une Georgsen looked unphased by the Panther attack, saving all five shots and recording her second clean sheet of the season.

“Une made saves that she should make, and it was great,” said Gore

The Trojans were without senior captain, and transfer from Northwestern State, Delaney Wells, who has netted two match winners this season.

“We had a few opportunities with set pieces and free kicks and corners,” said Gore. “It’s tough when Delaney’s out; that’s how she scores goals.”

Gore also gave his thoughts on the upcoming match against Marshall.

“They’re a team based off a lot of foreigners, it’s going to be very similar to the Monroe game with the way they move the ball,” said Gore. “We’ve got to be switched on at all times; otherwise, they’re going to slice through us.”

Unfortunately for Gore and company, the Trojans would drop that match against Marshall, conceding a goal in the third minute and two more in the second half.

“Just have to move on from this,” said Gore in an interview with Troy Athletics. “Not a good day in the office for us.”

Although the Trojans lost, they recorded thirteen shots to Marshall’s nine with Jiselle Daniels recording five of those shots, matching a career high.

Troy’s three match goalless streak is its longest slump since 2016.

The Trojans are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they head to Lafayette, Louisiana to take on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. That match will be streamed on ESPN+.
