The Troy softball team hosted the Trojan Classic last weekend and finished with a perfect 5-0 run to improve Troy’s overall record to 8-2.
Already coming off two straight wins, the Trojans opened the weekend with a Friday doubleheader. They got things started with an 8-5 win over Jacksonville.
The Trojans were the first team on the board after senior Becca Hartley slammed a three-run homerun over the wall in the second inning. Hartley finished the game a perfect 3-3 at the plate with four RBI’s.
Following a two-run response from Jacksonville, Troy plated another three runs in the fourth inning, including a solo home run by Hartley. Junior Erica Davis drove in two runs in the fifth inning to stretch Troy’s lead out to six runs. Jacksonville made a last-inning push with three runs in the seventh to make the final score 8-5.
Troy capped off the doubleheader with a 5-4 win over Longwood.
Longwood struck first with a run in the second, followed by another run in the third to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead. Utilizing three walks and a passed ball, the Trojans answered the bell in the bottom of the third inning with three runs scored.
Longwood responded with a tying run in the fourth after drawing three walks of its own. Troy then took a 5-3 lead in the fifth when Hartley scored on sophomore Stephanie Snyder’s double. Snyder then scored on an error on the next at-bat.
Troy held Longwood to one run in the seventh to capture the victory for sophomore pitcher Claire Graves.
The Trojans opened up day two of the Classic with a rematch against Longwood, this time winning 9-3.
Troy struck quickly, scoring two runs in the first inning followed by five runs on five hits in the second. Up 7-0 in the fourth, sophomore Madeline Porter singled up the middle and drove in two more runs for the Trojans.
The Lancers were able to extend the game by plating two runs in the fifth.
Longwood scored once more in the sixth but could not inflict anymore damage on senior pitcher Rachel Rigney, who pitched a complete game with five strikeouts.
Troy followed up the win by capturing the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win over Samford.
With the game knotted at one, Troy’s bats caught fire in the fourth. Hartley led off with a home run, her third of the weekend. After freshman Katie Webb was hit by a pitch, Troy hit back-to-back RBI doubles followed by an RBI single from sophomore Kaylee Hussey to make the score 5-1.
The two teams then traded runs over the next two innings and Rigney closed the game for her fourth win of the season.
Troy closed the weekend with another bout with Jacksonville that resulted in a 5-1 Trojan victory.
Each team scored a run in the first inning and went scoreless over the next two. Troy grabbed the lead in the bottom half of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from Hussey followed by an RBI single by Hartley to make the score 3-1.
Senior Meg Willis hit a two-run homer in the fifth to increase Troy’s lead to 5-1, where it would stay the rest of the game.
Graves pitched 6.2 innings and held Jacksonville to just one hit to garner her second win of the year.
“Every player on the team contributed in some way this weekend,” Head Coach Beth Mullins said. “When you have all 17 of your players do a job and contribute, it gives everyone confidence. The pitchers really brought the bullpen out there and trusted their defense, and I thought they did a really good job and fought hard.”
Troy returns to action with another five game weekend starting with Lipscomb on Friday at 5:30 pm.
