Troy students study abroad in Costa Rica

by Lenora Hollinghead

Numerous Troy University students are getting the chance to  study abroad in Costa Rica over spring break, thanks to an opportunity by the College of Arts and Sciences Global Scholars.

Studying abroad lets students and faculty members experience another part of life that they may have not experienced before. It also allows for opportunities to advance their knowledge in other cultures, have global connections, and a way to apply themselves and their studies in a new environment.

The first few days of this trip will be taking place at Jaco Beach in Costa Rica, allowing the students to relax and take in the environment around them before moving on to San Jose, Costa Rica.

Dr. Jay Valentine, an associate professor of philosophy at Troy University, will be one of two of the professors accompanying the students on the trip to Costa Rica.

“I think this will be a great opportunity for the students, as I believe none of our students going have been to Costa Rica before.” Valentine said. “On this trip the students will experience ecotourism activities including several national parks like Manuel Antonio, Carara and Arenal Volcano National Park.

Isabella Myrick, a sophomore accounting major from Fairhope, Alabama, is one of the students that will be taking part in this trip.

“I decided to join Dr. Valentine and Dr. Dautartas on their trip because I wanted to travel to a Spanish-speaking country,” Myrick said,

“I am minoring in Spanish, and this would be the perfect opportunity for me to apply my skills while being immersed in the language.”

Students who would like to travel on other study abroad trips can find more information on their website or contact Sarah McKenzie, Troy University’s Study Abroad Coordinator .

“Troy university likes to provide these study abroad opportunities to students because it makes them more globally competent citizens into the world” McKenzie said.
