LAFAYETTE, La. – The Sun Belt Conference announced the seeding for this week’s Sun Belt Tennis Championships on Tuesday, with the Troy women’s tennis team earning a No.3 seed and the Troy men’s tennis team earning a No.6 seed.
The tournament, hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette, begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday on the men’s side and Sunday for the women. Each winner will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
The Troy women (17-5) receive a bye into Friday’s quarterfinals with their No.3 seed in the 12-team women’s draw. The Trojans will face the winner of No.6 Middle Tennessee and No.11 Arkansas State at 11:30 a.m. at Red Lerille’s in Lafayette, La.
The Troy men (8-16) will take on No.3 Georgia State in the seven-team field on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Bourgeois Hall on Louisiana-Lafayette’s campus. A win would advance the Trojans to Friday’s semifinals where they would face the winner of No.2 South Alabama and No.7 WKU.
The Troy women enter the tournament having won 13 of their last 14 matches while the men enter having lost four straight. The women defeated both Middle Tennessee and Arkansas State this season, while the men lost to Georgia State.
The No.3 seed is the best seed for the Trojans since joining the Sun Belt in 2006. Troy’s previous best was a No.4 seed in 2010. The Troy women last won a conference tournament in 2004 when they won the Atlantic Sun and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The Troy men are three years removed from a No.2 seed and Sun Belt championship in 2010, marking the last NCAA Tournament trip for either team.
Complete brackets can be found at TroyTrojans.com or at SunBeltSports.org. All-Sun Belt teams will be announced on Wednesday in advance of the tournament beginning on Thursday.
