Troy volleyball loses seventh straight match

The Trojan volleyball team (9-19) struggled on Wednesday at home leading to crushing loss in four sets to the South Alabama Jaguars (24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25).

The top hitters for Troy were sophomore outside hitter Blair Winston with 19 kills, junior Marija Zelenovic with 14 kills, and freshman middle hitter Kiah Cheatham with 12 kills.

Another Trojan, senior setter Alexandra Alexander, posted 52 assists and 16 digs, while defensive specialist Kelley Curran gathered 13 digs and senior libero Courtney Cohen with 12 digs.

Troy came out on a mission in the first set playing the Jaguars hard and winning the first set 26-24 but that fire was short lived.

South Alabama took advantage of a suddenly sloppy and flat Troy team winning the second set 25-21.

The Jaguars kept the momentum on their side of the court taking set three 25-23.

The biggest set of the match was the fourth and final set.

The Trojans got behind early in the set but rallied midway through the set to swing the momentum Troy’s way.

Then Troy suddenly couldn’t make a dig to put the Jaguars away.

Pedestrian defense in the end was what handed the Trojans their seventh straight loss.

The mood after the match was so negative that players refused to comment on the game.

The good news is that the team will have two chances this snap this losing skid with matches against Arkansas State on Friday at 7 p.m. and UT Arlington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
