This week the Trojans will visit one of the most dominant teams in the SEC, the Georgia Bulldogs, on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m.
Anyone who loves football has probably heard the familiar name of junior tailback Todd Gurley and knows what kind of weapon he can be on the football field. This weekend will answer the question of if the Trojans can do enough soul searching and preparation to stop the aggressive run of Gurley and the Georgia offense.
Troy has struggled with stopping the running game this season though allowing more than 230 rushing yards per game.
One statistic that Troy has in their favor this weekend is the fact that there are 16 different Trojans with at least one reception this season, which gives junior quarterback Dontreal Pruitt more than enough targets to throw to against the Bulldog defense.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Brandon Silvers came out with a suspected concussion against Abilene Christian, but head coach Larry Blakeney is hopeful that he will make a quick recovery to help the Trojans compete when conference play begins in a couple of weeks.
“If you are hurting, then you embrace the guys that you know you can trust, you embrace each other and you try to find strength from each other,”Blakeney said.
Troy will have to take this to heart and really focus on the task at hand if they look to put up a fight against Georgia.
The Bulldogs may be 1-1 (0-1 SEC), but that loss was to a very good South Carolina football team.
Georgia is averaging over 430 yards of total offense this season, all against top 25 opponents, and Troy is allowing almost 480 yards of offense.
To show any type of fight this week against the stout offense of the Bulldogs, the Trojans must stop them on third down and prevent the violent rushing game up the middle.
On the offense, both teams have struggled with one thing this season: fumbling. Troy and Georgia have fumbled four times apiece.
However, Troy has done an excellent job at protecting the ball through the air, throwing the ball 150 consecutive times without an interception, which dates back to the end of last season.
It remains unknown if Troy can come together as a team in Athens this Saturday and see if the team has what it takes to prove itself against Georgia.
