Volleyball drops matches to conference foe

Troy lost both road Sun Belt Conference matches against Georgia Southern this past weekend 3-0, 3-2.

The Trojan offense was plagued with attack and service errors throughout both contests, totaling 29 service errors and 49 attack errors in only eight sets of play.

In the first match, the Trojans were swept for the third consecutive match as the offense hit a measly .096.

Despite Troy’s overall offensive stagnation, Tori Hester blasted a match-high 20 kills at an efficient .326 clip. Hester also added five blocks matching her career high.

Middle hitter Audrey Worthington led the Trojans in blocks with six while also matching her career high.

On Friday, the Trojans came out red hot, hitting a blistering .432 in the first set as they secured a 25-21 set victory. Outside hitter Amiah Butler led the Trojans with nine kills in the frame.

Troy’s offense struggled mightily in sets two and three, hitting under .100 through both sets as it fell 25-14 and 25-22.

Troy rallied in the must-win fourth set 25-22 thanks to excellent play from Hester and freshman Olivia Kwiatkowski who tallied seven and six kills, respectively.

Troy fell behind early in the tiebreak but scrounged up a 6-1 run to tie things up at 10 apiece before eventually losing 15-12.

Troy hit an impressive .467 in the tiebreak but was unable to capitalize during some crucial points in the frame.

Although Georgia Southern won the day, Kwiatkowski put together a standout performance by hitting a career-high 16 kills on an eye-popping .542 hitting percentage.

Hester led the Trojans in kills yet again with 22 and reached 1,500 kills, a club exclusive to only three other players in Troy volleyball history. Hester also led the team with 13 digs to record her sixth double-double of the season.

Amiah Butler showed out with a double-double of her own, including 17 kills and 11 digs.

Head coach Josh Lauer and the Trojans will look to rebound and put a stop to their four-game conference skid during their home series against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Oct 18 at 6 p.m. in the Trojan Arena.
