Volleyball drops road matches

Troy’s volleyball team suffered its first two  Sun Belt Conference losses on the road last weekend to a tough Texas State squad.

The Trojans were unable to capture a single set from the dominating Bobcat offense who hit north of .300 over the weekend.

Troy’s offense was functioning early, hitting around .300 in the first sets of both matches, but Texas State adjusted both times to shut down Troy’s attackers and easily secure both matches in 3-0 fashion.

Tori Hester still managed to tally 32 kills over the six sets of play while extending her double-digit kill streak to 36 consecutive matches played. Hester’s 4.82 kills per set is the best of any hitter in the Sun Belt and fifth across the nation.

Another bright spot for the Trojans this week was Sara Bates’ service game. Bates crushed two aces in the first match and added three more in the second match.

Bates leads the Trojans with 22 aces and her excellent .45 aces per set is best in the Sun Belt Conference so far this season.

Sophomore Maleah Howe saw the court for just the second time this season and put up six kills for the Trojans.

Head coach Josh Lauer was unfazed by the losses and is encouraging his team to pull together after the tough road losses.

“We faced some adversity this week with injury and had to make some unique adjustments,” said Lauer to Troy Athletics. “I was proud of the way our team handle the changes and stayed together and competitive.”

Troy, which is 2-2 in Sun Belt play, will turn its attention to its upcoming pair of conference matches against 2-0 Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia, on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.
