Ora NelsonContributor Welcome Week is a series of events for students to get involved in the university while having fun and getting excited for the start of a new year. It is sponsored by the Student Involvement Office and is a great way for students to meet new people and experience what student life is like at Troy, according to University Activities Council (UAC) President De’Korrius Johnson, a senior global business major from Grove Hill. “Coming into college is a fresh start, and everyone (in Troy) is really nice and genuine,” Johnson said. “College is one of the best times of your life; (when you) come to college, (you) have a new mindset. “I feel like in college, this is a time to start to get to know yourself and meet new people — that’s what Welcome Week is about. “When I came, I met people that I didn’t know that I would have been friends with (in high school), but through Welcome Week, it helped me to find those new people.” “Students look forward to the block party and Step Tease, just because they’re social gatherings and the buzz they build up,” said Sadaris Williams, the assistant director of student involvement and leadership. He went on to comment on the benefit of getting involved and how it would open new doors for students who joined in future opportunities. “Going to the different events made me feel like Troy was going to be a good school for me,” said Shelby Days, a sophomore nursing major from Pensacola, Florida. “(Welcome Week) made me feel excited to be a freshman here.” Attending Welcome Week can help students navigate the campus and learn of some of the organizations and activities Troy has to offer. A full Welcome Week schedule can be found on the Troy UAC Facebook page.
