Troy women’s basketball returned to their winning ways with a 70-45 win over Southern Miss after dropping their weekday matchup against Arkansas State on the road.

A big fourth quarter helped push the Trojans women’s basketball team back into the win column after a two-game slide in conference play.

“What a good day we had here in Southern Miss.” said head coach Chanda Rigby in an interview with Troy Athletics. “Our team got in a groove and kept them in.

“I’m most proud of our rebound effort, outrebounding them by 30 and scoring 30 points in the fourth quarter.”

It was a balanced effort from the Trojans in the win as senior Briana Peguero and junior Emani Jenkins both led the team with 13 points. Senior Ashley Baez recorded her own 11 points with forwards Fortuna Ngnawo and Brianna Jackson scoring 10 points each.

Jackson also finished with nine rebounds, right behind junior Zay Dyer who led the team with 10 total rebounds.

Troy started the game slow but strong, doubling up Southern Miss in the first quarter with a 15-7 lead going into the second quarter. The two teams played evenly going into halftime, with Troy leading 30-22.

Southern Miss had the advantage in another low scoring quarter as they cut the lead down to five points going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Troy t-- the Trojans started the quarter on a 21-5 run to put the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles.

Troy kept their foot on the gas for most of the quarter, winning by 25 points after outscoring Southern Miss 30-10 in the fourth.

It was a great bounce back win for the Trojans after falling 91-77 to the second place Arkansas State Red Wolves on the road.

Three forwards led the way for Troy against the Red Wolves as Jackson finished with 16 points. Dyer followed closebehind with 14 points of her own, and Ngnawo poured in 10 points of her own.

The knife in the back for the Trojans was 17 made triples by the Red Wolves, which was a league leading performance from Arkansas State.

The Trojans were on the back foot early as Arkansas State got their lead up to eight points halfway through the first quarter. Troy was able to shrink that lead down to four by the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter Troy came out hot, outscoring the Red Wolves 21-11 to take a 41-35 lead into halftime.

That was the best the Trojans could do, though, as the Red Wolves came out of the locker room swinging, outscoring Troy 34-19 in the third quarter. This onslaught from Arkansas State would put Troy down 60-69 going into the final quarter.

The Trojans kept the deficit around 10 points for half of the final quarter before Arkansas State started to push the lead in the final four minutes.

The Red Wolves kept the lead to eventually win 91-77 and hold their second-place spot in Sun Belt Conference play.

After the two games, Troy stays in a tie for third place in conference, holding the tiebreaker over Appalachian State, who they beat 85-68 back in January.

The Trojans return home for a four-game homestand, starting the stretch by playing host to Old Dominion at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
