Women’s basketball travels to Costa Rica

The Troy women’s basketball team had the opportunity to spend eight days in Costa Rica from July 18 to July 26.

In that eight-day span, the team got to tour the capital city of San Juan, explore the natural foliage of the area and hold their own camp for the local kids.

The Trojans also got to test their new-look roster against international competition as they participated in two games on day one of the trip. The Trojan squad, which features nine new players out of the 12 currently on the team, won both games.

The first game ended with a score of 94-50 while the second game finished with a final score of 78-56.

In game one, three newcomers led the way, as junior guard Adriana Jones scored 23 points. Another junior guard, Emani Jenkins, followed Jones on the stat sheet with 18 points of her own. Behind them came senior guard Ashley Baez who tallied 12 of her own points in the 44-point victory.

In the second contest, Jenkins led the team in the lower scoring affair with 15 points while Baez and senior center Emma Imevbore followed behind with 10 points each. Two Trojans – junior forwards Fortuna Ngnawo and Jamirica Roberson – also finished with double-digit rebounds, each grabbing 13 boards.

Once the games were finished, the Trojans had time to explore the area in which they visited a coffee plantation, learning about the process used to create the coffee, before going on a hike through the rain forest. On the hike, the Trojans got to experience some of the wildlife in the area, including butterflies and sloths.

The team also traveled to the cities of Los Seueños and Jaco where they got the opportunity to play soccer and basketball with kids at the local orphanage. The team would spend the next three days in the area while they explored the jungles of Jaco on ATV and horseback.

Finally, the Trojans had the opportunity to go on a Catamaran excursion into the Pacific Ocean where they got to explore a private waterfall and Costa Rica beaches before swimming in the Ocean itself.

The Trojans returned home on July 26 and now gear up for their season opener, where they travel to Buffalo to play Buffalo in the first leg of the Sun Belt Conference versus Mid-American Conference Challenge on Nov. 4.
