Women’s golf struggles in season opener

The Troy women’s golf team struggled in its season opener at the Schooner Fall Classic this past weekend, finishing 11th place in the 12-team tournament in Norman, Oklahoma.

Junior Fatima Fernandez Cano led the Trojans, tying for 19th overall with a 1-over-143 finish. Cano finished with five birdies in a 1-under-70 performance in the tournament.

The tournament, held at the Belmar Golf Club, saw lots of movement in the placement of its participants over the course of the three-day event that saw the Trojans competing against top-25 teams from the Big 12 and SEC.

The  Trojans saw some new faces on the course, with junior Gabi Oubre shooting an even par in the final day of play. Oubre also recorded five birdies and an eagle in the final day of play, securing a tie for 41st place.

Freshmen Lindsay Harrison and Bianca Lohbauer both made their collegiate debuts, earning 48th and 56th place in the final tournament standings, respectively. Harrison finished with a 9-over-80 performance and a birdie in her round, with Lohbauer recorded a five-over-76 to go along with two birdies.

A 10-over-81 in the final round from junior Becca Horner helped her take 64th in the standings.

The Trojans return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27, when they travel to play in the Chris Banister Golf Classic in Glencoe.
