At the Huntsville.org Intercollegiate, the Troy women’s golf team ran away with
the title after three Trojans placed in the top 10. Troy battled through harsh, windy
conditions on the second day of the event.
“I am so excited for this team,” head coach Randy Keck said. “They’ve put in the
work and deserve to see the success.
“Today was one of the toughest days of golf I’ve ever witnessed, the wind was
blowing 20-40 MPH all day.”
The Trojans – who won their first title since last spring at the GSU Invitational –
bested competition from North Alabama, Samford, UNC Asheville, Tennessee Tech,
Belmont and more. Troy won by six shots, with North Alabama placing second.
Leading the Trojans was Victoria Stutts, who finished just three shots off No. 54
Gabi Nicastro for first place. Stutts’ 13 birdies led the field.
Laura Fangmeyer finished tied for third place, just one shot behind Stutts. The
junior used four birdies in the final round to secure the podium finish.
Rounding out Troy’s top 10 finishers was Mathilda Ringblom, who placed eighth.
She’s had a strong spring after playing only one event in the fall season.
Katelynn Altese ended the event tied for 20th place – it’s her third top 25 finish of
the season. Alyssa Mercado capped off Troy’s performance with a 46th place finish.
Although the Trojans led the event after the first day of competition, they had to
stave off the weather to secure the win. Troy’s +31 mark on day two was enough to
hold the lead it had amassed.
“Today, it was more of an endurance test than a golf tournament,” Keck said. “To
get a win today feels absolutely amazing.”
The Trojans have until Mar. 17 to prepare for the WKU Spring Break Shootout,
where they look to carry their momentum over. Troy will try to secure another victory
at the two-day event in Dade City, Florida.
