Troy University’s women’s golf team traveled to South Carolina and tied for eighth place among 41 teams in the Kiawah Island Spring Classic.
The first team tournament of Troy’s season took place at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, from Feb. 28 to March 1. The Trojans entered this weekend with two Sun Belt Conference championships under their belt and a second place ranking in the Sun Belt.
Troy played on the Osprey Point course on Sunday, the first day of the event, where junior Fatima Fernandez Cano fired a 3-under 69, leading her team in the opening round of the tournament. Cano hit 3-under par after the first six holes, having birdied the twelfth, fifteenth, and sixteenth holes.
At the end of the first day, Troy’s freshman Lindsey Harrison, freshman Bianca Lohbauer, and junior Becca Horner were tied for 58th place.
Cano advanced two places into the individual lead despite windy conditions at the Oak Point Course that Monday. She hit a round of 72, again leading Troy.
Cano scored birdies on two of her first six holes, eventually making the turn at 1-under par. After scoring two bogies, she came back with two more birdies on the par-3 No. 15 hole, closing the day with an even par.
With this performance, she was set to begin with a one point lead over Elon’s Heather Munro in the final round on Tuesday.
Lohbauer did her part to bring another strong run for the team, carding a 2-over 74 and tying for 23rd place out of 216 competitors. Her first nine holes were action-packed, as she nabbed three birdies and three bogeys making the turn at even par.
After their Monday performance, the Trojans—along with the other 19 top teams—were able to advance to the third day of the tournament and compete for the team title at the Osprey Point Course, while the remaining teams played back at the Oak Point Course.
Cano shot a 6-under 21o, claiming a share of the individual title, tying her own university record. In the final round, she won her second individual title of the year and the fourth in her career. As a team, the Trojans shot 11-over in the final round, earning them a tied spot in eighth place.
The remainder of the team claimed tied spots. Lohbauer came in a tied 63rd place, Horner tied for 96th place, Harrison tied for 101st place, and junior Gabi Oubre tied for 126th.
The Trojans will play again March 11-13 in Augusta, Georgia, at the 3M Jaguar Intercollegiate.
