Women’s tennis continues to roll with win over App State

The Troy women’s tennis team defeated Sun Belt foe Appalachian State 4-2 at the Lunsford Tennis Complex on Thursday, March 24.

With the victory, the Trojans (10-4, 2-0) have won five of their last six matches, their only loss to South Florida earlier this month. Not only was this their second Sun Belt win of the season; Troy also rose to second place in the conference.

The Trojan women started the day on a strong foot, winning both doubles matches. Sophomores Nancy Karaky and Sanae Ohta won 6-0 at the No. 3 set, the pair’s fifth straight doubles win.

Freshman Hannah Seizer and junior Alicia Rodriguez also won, wrapping with 6-3 in the No. 1 set. The third doubles match went unfinished.

Ohta won the first singles match of the day and her personal sixth-straight singles win 7-6, 7-4, 6-1 over Gabrielle Wreder at No. 3.  Appalachian State (4-9, 0-1) eventually won the No. 1 singles with a straight-set win.

Karaky won her fifth-straight singles win and brought Troy ahead 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rebecca Morse at No. 5.

The Mountaineers’ Heidi Swope defeated Trojan sophomore Efriliya Herlina 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 4 singles spot. While the No. 2 singles match went unfinished, Troy freshman Luisa Ferrauti won the No. 6 match over McKayla Zupan 6-3, 7-5, settling the overall win for Troy.

The women’s tennis team will return to action on Saturday, April 2, when it takes on Alabama A&M at home. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
