Women’s tennis plays at ITA Southern Regional

The Troy women’s tennis team spent the past weekend competing in the ITA Southern regional tournament held by Auburn, with the Trojans making it to round two before bowing out of the tournament.


Day one of the tournament featured qualifying round one for singles two Trojans advanced to round two. Junior Valeriia Avdeeva received a bye to round two before falling 4-6, 2-6 to Julie Bedard from Auburn.


The other Trojan to advance to round two, Emilia Namyslo, advanced through the consolation bracket after losing her first match to Athina Petta of Mississippi State 4-6, 2-6. In the consolation bracket she beat Jordan Parker of Southern Miss 3-6, 7-5, and 10-8 before receiving a bye in round two.


For day two the Trojans finished 2-2 in singles before starting their doubles campaign 1-3. In singles, sophomore Leena Metwally and junior Maria Guirguis both won their matches to advance to round two.


Metwally defeated Ana Hollweg of McNeese 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, and 6-4, while Guirguis on the other hand, won her match with ease as she beat Marium Hatem of ULM 6-2, 6-4.


The two losses on day two came from seniors Hagar Ramadan-Amin and Gabrielle Leslie with both continued to day three through the consolation bracket.


In doubles play on day two, two Trojan doubles partners advanced to round two with the duo of Avdeeva and Guirguis beating ULM 8-1 and the duo of Metwally and Ramadan-Amin receiving a first-round bye.


Both duos would lose in round two with Avdeeva and Guirguis falling to Auburn 6-8 and Metwally and Ramadan-Amin ending their doubles campaign against Samford 3-8.


Day three of the ITA southern regional saw just singles play with two Trojans competing in round two, consolation round one and pickup round one each.


In round two of the main event Guirguis and Metwally both bowed out against SEC opponents as Guirguis fell to Ava Hraster of Auburn 2-6, 4-6 and Metwally dropped both games to Anita Sahdiieva of LSU 3-6, 3-6.


In the consolation bracket, Leslie came away with the Trojans’ only win of the day as she defeated Ava Esposito Cogan of Auburn by a score of 7-5, 6-4. Ramadan-Amin, on the other hand, fought hard but ultimately fell to Kenna Erickson of LSU 3-6, 5-7.


Namyslo and Avdeeva also played on day three with competing in round one of pickup. Namyslo fell to Ariane Monlleo Sanchis of McNeese 2-6, 3-6 while Avdeeva fell to Kristyna Damaskova of UAB 3-6, 1-6 to end the Trojans’ time in Auburn.


The Troy women’s tennis team next returns to the court at the Scarlet and Black Open by Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Arkansas. The event takes place from Oct. 25 through 27 and is the penultimate fall tournament for Troy before the spring.
