Women’s tennis routs Alabama A&M, 6-1

The Troy women’s tennis team won its last home match of the 2016 season on Saturday, April 2, at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

The Trojans (11-5) defeated Alabama A&M 6-1. Though the Trojans came off a tough loss to South Alabama last week at home, they bounced back to earn an impressive win.

The victory marked the team’s seventh win of its last eight matches played.

It was not difficult for Troy to win the doubles point. The three pairs won 6-0, 6-3, and 6-2 decisions at the No. 3, No. 2 and No. 1 spots, which brought the team to their initial 1-0 lead.

Freshman Tereza Melicharkova gave Troy a 2-0 lead with her 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 singles. Following her was freshman teammate Hannah Seizer with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 singles match, and then, sophomore Efriliya Herlina rose victorious with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 3 singles spot.

Sophomore Nancy Karaky won her match shortly after with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 4. Alabama A&M (3-11) achieved its one point for the day at the No. 1 singles spot, where sophomore Jiayuan Xue fell 6-0, 6-4 at the hands of her opponent.

Junior Alicia Rodriguez wrapped up the day’s match by winning 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 5 singles spot.

The Troy women’s tennis team plays again on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, in Atlanta against conference foes No. 46 Georgia State and Georgia Southern.
