The Troy women’s tennis team traveled to Auburn this past weekend, losing to the home team 0-7 and defeating the University of Tennessee at Martin 5-2.
Troy was initially scheduled to play their first home matches on Friday, Feb. 5, but that has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 17. On Saturday, Feb. 6, the Trojans’ three-match win streak was broken by the Tigers at Yarbrough Tennis Center.
No. 40 Auburn outplayed Troy in a shutout decision. There were six single matches in which all but two of the women on Troy’s roster competed.
Two of Auburn’s players hold top-35 rankings. In one of the six single matches, Auburn’s Andie Dikosavljevic—ranked No. 31—defeated Troy’s Jiayuan Xue 6-3, 6-3. As for doubles, No. 30 Pleun Burgmans and teammate Paula de Man defeated Troy’s Efriliya Herlina and Alicia Rodriguez 6 – 0.
The Tigers won two doubles matches and then all six singles matches.
After their loss to Auburn, the Trojans rebounded for a 5-2 win over the University of Tennessee at Martin in Auburn. Troy did not start well, losing the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches, but it dominated in singles, winning five of six matches.
In the third doubles match, Troy players Sanae Ohta and teammate Nancy Karaky played against UT Martin’s Asel Jumamukhambetova and Andrea Plantada Cortes, but the match went unfinished at 5-6.
Efriliya Herlina, Sanae Ohta, and Nancy Karaky have led the way for the Trojan women this season, each going 3-1 in their singles matches. Herlina in particular achieved the highest-ranking win of the season, beating FIU’s No. 69 Nerma Caluk.
Troy University’s women’s tennis team is set to play again on Friday, Feb. 12, at Winthrop in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
