Team ends two matches with a 1-1 record after win over Alabama State and loss to Mercer

Troy women’s tennis bounced back from a tough loss to Mercer with a 5-2 victory over Alabama State.

The Troy women’s tennis team opened their road weekend by facing off against Mercer this past weekend.

Troy got out to an early lead with 6-2 victories in doubles on court one and three.

Valeriia Avdeeva quickly dispatched her opponent 6-3, 6-1 to grow the Trojan advantage to 2-0 on court four.

Senior Hagar Ramadan-Amin dominated her opponent 6-4, 6-1 for her first win on court five this season to put the Trojans in 3-0 clinching position.

The Bears fiercely battled back and won the remaining four matches, three of which went to three sets, to snatch the victory from the Trojans 4-3.

Troy hit the reset button and came out ready to play on Sunday as they jumped out to an early lead via the doubles point again against Alabama State.

Freshman Veena Nazar and Emilia Namyslo trounced their opponents 6-0 on court two for their first collegiate win in doubles as a pairing.

Leena Metwally and Ramadan-Amin finished off their opponents in 6-2 fashion to secure the doubles point for Troy.

Avdeeva crushed her opponent 6-0, 6-0 on court four in her third consecutive singles victory while fellow junior Maria Guirguis finished off her opponent 6-3, 7-5 to put the Trojans up 3-0 for the second time in the weekend.

This time, the Trojans finished the job as Metwally rallied back with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win on court three.

The win marked Metwally’s first victory above court five in singles so far in her collegiate tennis career.

The remaining matches were played out with two going the way of the Hornets.

Gabrielle Leslie fought back in a gritty three-setter after going down early to seize her first win of the season 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

It also marked Leslie’s first win on court one for the Trojans as she saw the majority of her action last year on court six.

The 5-2 win over Alabama State gave Troy their first road win of the season and improved their record to 2-3 so far in non-conference play.

The team will next head to New Orleans, Lousiana, to square off against University of New Orleans and Tulane on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 as they continue their long road stretch.
