Writing with AI decreases authenticity


As artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances, its use in content creation becomes increasingly prevalent.


While AI tools offer convenience and speed, there are several significant drawbacks to relying on them for writing tasks. These concerns span from issues of creativity and quality to ethical considerations and personal development.


AI-generated content often suffers from a lack of genuine creativity. These tools generate text based on patterns and data from existing sources, meaning they can only remix and repackage existing ideas rather than creating truly original content.


This limitation can result in writing that feels formulaic and uninspired. Human writers, in contrast, draw upon their unique experiences and imagination to produce fresh and innovative ideas, which AI is currently unable to replicate.


AI systems may struggle with producing content that requires deep understanding or nuanced analysis. While AI can access and process vast amounts of information, it does not possess the ability to truly comprehend context or complex subject matter.


This can lead to superficial or incomplete coverage of topics. For fields that demand detailed analysis and accurate representation, such as academic writing or investigative journalism, AI-generated content often falls short in terms of depth and quality.


Using AI to write content raises ethical and authenticity issues. AI tools can inadvertently replicate biases present in their training data, potentially leading to misleading or biased information.


Moreover, there is a concern about authenticity when AI-generated content is presented as if it were created by a human. In contexts where personal voice and perspective are important—such as in opinion pieces or personal blogs—the use of AI can undermine the credibility and authenticity of the content.


Dependence on AI for writing can lead to a deterioration of one’s own writing skills. Writing is a skill that improves with practice, and over-reliance on AI tools can prevent individuals from developing and refining their abilities. As people become more accustomed to outsourcing their writing tasks to AI, they might find themselves less capable of crafting coherent, well-thought-out text independently.

Additionally, attributing AI-generated content to a human creator complicates matters of intellectual property, potentially diluting the value of original human creativity.


While AI can offer efficiency and convenience, it has several limitations that can impact the quality, authenticity and ethical considerations of writing. Human input remains essential for producing meaningful, accurate and engaging content that truly reflects personal insights and creativity.

Did it feel ‘formulaic and uninspired’ when you read it? Maybe it ‘lacked a personal touch?’


The fact of the matter is, AI should never be used in a newsroom. Journalism is an artform that cannot be recreated effectively by a formula. AI doesn’t even understand AP style, I had to go back and fix the spacing and the use of the Oxford comma.


The use of AI in journalism is a rising problem, causing many news outlets to lose valuable credibility with their readers and undermining the necessity of a real reporter.


My question is, what happens when news organizations get away with it? Sports Illustrated got caught, but I’m sure there are countless others in operation right now using AI as a “ghost writer” and just slapping a name in the story, not caring if they get caught because they didn’t have to pay anyone to write the story.


Not to mention the fact that AI is constantly evolving. Have you seen the videos it can create? Downright creepy if you ask me. But even still, words are much easier to create than images. With some of the more advanced AI systems, I’m sure you can teach and tune it to write in AP style, with a news voice. Tell it to use these quotes with this attribution.


Very quickly, you would have an entire story just waiting to be copied and pasted into a document, lightly refined or edited, and sent in to be used.


As journalists, we have a universally accepted code of ethics, and it pains me to think that some would turn against this just to have an easier, cheaper way to conduct journalism.


It took only two tries to get the information I wanted from ChatGPT. I asked it, “please write 500 words in AP style about why using AI to write for you is bad,” and in what felt like maybe five seconds there it was.


For the sake of this article, yes, I used AI to prove a point, but AI-written content has no place in journalism.
