
Troy women’s basketball had big shoes to fill coming off last year’s record-breaking performance. Against all odds, the Trojans went on a Cinderella type run to the Fab 4 of the WNIT.
Troy continued last year’s success by earning a top three position in the conference. Alongside their standing they’re in the top three in the conference in several categories. Among the categories, Troy ranks first in scoring offense and defensive rebounds.
There have been many contributors that have played a role in the success of the team-. Zay Dyer is one of three Trojans from last year’s team to return and she leads the team in both points and rebounds. Her success was predicted in a sense as she was named a member of the 2024-25 preseason All Sun-Belt Third Team.
The junior forward has joined the 200 club in both statistical categories. She has tallied 295 points alongside 245 rebounds. Her totals have brought her season stats to 12.6 points per game and 10.7 rebounds.
In recent action against conference foe Coastal Carolina the Atlanta, Georgia, native achieved a career high in both categories. She finished the game with 25 points and 21 rebounds.
In her three years of college experience, Dyer has proven to be consistent. She’s eclipsed 200 points in each season as well as 125 rebounds. In each season she also has shot the ball near a 50% clip.
Dyer’s high level of play is expected to extend through the month of February. February allows the nation to acknowledge the women that make the world of sports what it is. Specifically, February 5 is known as National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
NGWSD has been celebrated for 39 years. Across the country, events will be held to highlight the accomplishments and contributions of girls and women both past and present. NGWSD’s origin can be traced back to honoring the life and legacy of Flo Hyman.
The Women’s Sports Foundation began their work pertaining to the celebration in 1987.
Prominent figures such as Billie Jean King played instrumental parts in the celebration.
Although there is no official celebration in Troy, the Trojans will be in action on NGWSD.
