TROYU4U in conjunction with ReadyU hosted a successful fundraiser on Feb. 13 at the Boys and Girls Club of Pike County and Surrounding Counties as the first step in achieving the goal of $500 in donations.
The Zumba fundraiser was the first of several events to raise funds to not only benefit the Boys and Girls Club, but raise money for presentation for community leaders held by TROYU4U.
TROYU4U raised $120 for their night class taught by Zumba instructor Dara Bryant.
Bryant conducted two sessions at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club with each class having a large group of participants.
Kayla McGough and Amanda Smith, members of TROYU4U and representatives of ReadyU used the event to distribute free Venus razors and Old Spice products for the participants along with three-day passes for Zumba sessions at Walt’s Gym.
“I think the event was very successful,” McGough said. “We had a great student turn out and it made the Zumba sessions a lot of fun. We were able to raise over $100 for the Boys and Girls Club. It was just a win-win situation for everyone. We are all a part of helping an organization in need while getting fit and meeting new people.”
The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority donated water for the participants of the class and almost half of the sorority took part in the sessions.
McGough’s goal is to see that awareness is brought to the Boys and Girls Club.
“Many people in our community aren’t aware that there is a Boys and Girls Club and I think that there are so many ways that the students of Troy University could get involved and the kids who attend the Boys and Girls Club could benefit from interacting with one another,” McGough said. “We wanted to have the class at their facility to bring people into the club.”
Hunter Beck who serves on TROYU4U’s fundraising committee expressed his excitement for the success of the first event and says the group has more events in the planning stages.
“I definitely think the fundraiser went well, especially for our very first one,” Beck said. “Everyone worked together well to make it a success and I’m looking forward to our next fundraiser.”
TROYU4U is currently working on scheduling another fundraiser before spring break and the class hopes to partner with a local restaurant in Troy for their next event.
