A free cultural experience will be available to Troy University students and the community this weekend.
The Ma-Chis Lower Creek Indian Tribe of Alabama Pow Wow will take place Friday, Oct. 21, and Saturday, Oct. 22, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on both days.
The Pow Wow will be hosted on the Troy University practice field and is open to everyone, not just tribe members.
“It will be an adventure-packed family event with plenty of education and recreation,” said Nancy Carnley,vice chief of Ma-Chis Lower Creek Indian Tribe of Alabama.
Attendees will learn about Creek Indian history and culture, experience various dances, view a “Grand Entry” and hear from an award-winning flute player.
“Lowery Begay, (Navajo) four time World Champion Hoop Dancer, will demonstrate hoop dancing,” Carnley said. “Also, there will be numerous other dances performed, such as jingle dance and fancy dance, both male and female.”
Children, kindergarten through 12th grade, were invited to participate in a writing or art competition focusing on Creek heritage and culture. Entries were submitted by Monday, Oct. 17, and winners of the competitions will be announced Saturday, Oct. 22, at noon.
Vendors will be present, showcasing items, food and artwork both Native and non-Native.
There will also be door prizes for all ages given out every hour, and winners must be present to claim their prizes.
