The Troy track and field team continued its strong showing in the outdoor season with several top finishers in the Samford Alabama Track Challenge.
Several in-state rival programs pushed many Trojans to their best marks of the year as Troy captured first place in 12 different events.
The women’s team finished strong on the field and on the track. Helga Volgyi picked up a first-place finish on the field after a season-best 56.42-meter heave in the hammer throw. Corina Cox followed with a top spot in the discus after a 50.19-meter throw, leading to her third consecutive victory.
Alexis Garrett took the 100m hurdles after her 14.49 second performance, followed by a top finish in the 200-meter dash by Niata Alexander.
The men’s squad followed the women’s performance in the 4×100-meter and 4×400-meter relay by winning both as well, sweeping the sprint relays against in-state competition.
“This is the second great meet in as many weeks we’ve had,” Head Coach Marc Davis said. “I am pleased at the fight that they are showing at this point in the season. The mission remains clear from week to week, and so far they’ve been following the plan. Next week is a huge step up for everyone. We will compete against many of the best in the country, so we have to be on top of our game.”
The men’s results mirrored the women’s as they captured top spots in a pair of field events. Zach Douglas and Myles Charley delivered enough for a first-place finish in the shotput and long jump, respectively.
Daniel Glick and Hakim Montgomery highlighted the men’s effort on the track as Glick brought home the top spot in the 3000-meter steeplechase, while Montgomery’s 21.38 second time was good enough for first as well in the 200-meter dash.
The track and field team will continue the regular season run at the Pepsi Florida Relays. The three-day meet, hosted by the Florida Gators, will start Thursday in Gainesville.
