Troy University has recently added a series of statues to multiple campuses around the state.
The statues, which have been given to Troy by Huo Boa Zhu, were donated along with the Terracotta Warrior exhibit that was unveiled last year. This summer, the series of stand-alone statues made its debut to the public when they were placed throughout the campus and were noticed by returning Troy students.
“It is the desire of Dr. Hawkins and myself to make the campus of Troy University as beautiful as we can. We want our students to be proud of their university,” said Janice Hawkins, referring to her husband, Chancellor Jack Hawkins Jr.
These new statues include the saxophone musician placed in front of Long Hall, the child and father in front of Hawkins Hall, the baseball player by the baseball field, and the man in front of New Residence Hall.
“I like the saxophone man statue not only because that’s the instrument I play, but because it shows that the university appreciates and cares about the music program and the hard work students put into their passion,” said Hunter Miller, a sophomore music education major from Dothan.
Recently, the new series of statues has disappeared temporarily. According to Tom Davis, executive assistant on the chancellor’s staff, the statues were originally set out during Welcome Week for students to admire as they returned to campus, but were then removed and taken to Pinckard Vault and Marble Works in Troy for more permanent bases to be installed and secured.
