Troy University offers several helpful resources that not all students may know about. Many of these services are free.
The library, Eldridge Hall and John M. Long School of Music are a few places on campus that offer helpful resources to aid in students’ success.
“The library provides access to many online academic databases that people aren’t aware of,” said Rachel Hooper, an assistant professor who is head of reference in the library.
Students can log on to trojan.troy.edu/library to access hundreds of academic databases, including access to New York Times, Flipster (a digital magazine newsstand), Naxos music library, language databases and multiple e-book databases.
Besides the online archives, the library also provides interlibrary loans and Google Chromebooks for students to rent.
“If there’s a book that you want that we don’t have at the Troy campus, we can interlibrary loan that for you.” Hooper said, “Typically, it’s free of
charge.”
“(Students) need to submit the request online.”
Students in need of a laptop can check out a Google Chromebook for a week at a time from the front desk at the library at no charge.
Additionally, for those who want to exercise while studying, the library has a bike room that is open to all students.
Eldridge Hall offers tutoring, advising and more.
“The John W. Schmidt Center for Student Success is a center that is not as well used as it ought to be because we have so many resources,” said Jonathan Broyles, counselor of student development. “We have a federally funded TRIO program.
“First-generation college students or students with financial need or students with documented disability can apply for academic and (financial) assistance. We have academic advisers who advise students who are taking developmental classes, conditionally admitted, undecided about their majors, seeking associate’s degrees or seeking interdisciplinary studies degrees.”
The Natural Science Center at Eldridge Hall provides tutoring services to students for free.
Pawan Khatiwada, a senior physics and mathematics major from Kathmandu, Nepal, and a tutor in the Natural Science Center, said students can get individual assistance.
“(The center) provides tutoring services in the areas of physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology,” Khatiwada said. “Students can drop by anytime from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and until 3 p.m. on Friday.”
Eldridge Hall also houses a computer lab where students can access the internet and print school-related material in black and white for free.
Additionally, the Writing Center in Eldridge Hall provides assistance at any stage of the writing process.
The John M. Long School of Music provides some facilities that most students may not know about.
“Smith Hall has practice rooms with Steinway pianos in them,” said Chase McKoy, a senior music education major from Wilsonville.
