On a college campus, students are expected to get out and meet people while enjoying events during their leisure time. What would be better than celebrating something that is already a known tradition in neighboring cities and states?
Troy University’s students could benefit by celebrating Mardi Gras in February.
During the spring season, students do not have many holidays or breaks other than Spring Break. Adding in some festivities, such as Mardi Gras parades and maybe Mardi Gras balls, would be so advantageous to everyone.
Any college campus would benefit from this as it is a way for people to get out of their dorms and houses to socialize as well as listen to jazz bands and catch free food, Moon pies and especially Ramen Noodles.
Wearing the decorative beads and colors of the holiday adds to the festivity and could even benefit local shops in Troy by advertising the classic purple, green and gold look for the season.
Any parade would need organizing. This would take time, effort and the worst part, money. It is possible with the help of fundraising and reaching out to the local community. People could easily gather around downtown Troy. Involving the police station and fire department for a parade would take more time and planning but, for only a few weekends out of the season.This is something they would not want to miss.
Neighboring Alabama cities such as Birmingham, Mobile, and even Auburn are all known to celebrate Mardi Gras.
Troy should start being more innovative and join the thrill. This would be so worthwhile to the city of Troy and would give locals something to look forward to each year.
