Novak Djokovic made history when he won Australian Open for the third time in a row last week. He is the first tennis player to do so.
Djokovic’s victory was also his fourth win in six years. Under the roasting, beaming sun in Melbourne Djokovic made history in a game where he was stressed and pressed by Andy Murray.
Djokovic beat British Murray after losing the first set 7-6. He won three straight sets 7-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Will 2013 be Djokovic’s year? And will he be able to win the Grand Slam?
In theory, the winner of Australian Open has the chance to win the Grand Slam – including Australian Open, French Open, US Open and Wimbledon, but no one has been close in a long time. The last time was when Rod Laver won the Grand Slam in 1969.
Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal can put a stop to Djokovic’s rampaging, but Djokovic remains number one after winning the 2013 edition of Australian Open. This could finally be Djokivic’s year. No more Federer, Murray or Nadal.
Djokovic needs to show a great span and strength during the year to be a contender for the Grand Slam, but Djokovic won Wimbledon and US Open in 2011, and showed that he has what it takes to win major tournaments.
Murray will, however, be a great threat to Djokovic’s magnificence. Then there is grass favorite Federer, who can be a danger in Wimbledon. Nadal has been suffering from injuries and his standings are uncertain. Djokovic can crush the curse and be the first player in men’s single to win a Grand Slam in 44 years.
On Djokovic’s to-do-list is probably a win in French Open, which is the only major tournament that he hasn’t won yet. If Djokovic wins in Paris, then US Open and Wimbledon will be great competitions. I think the tennis world is ready for a new headliner. Out with Federer, Murray and Nadal.
Djokovic would need some kind of miracle to climb all the way to the finals in all four major tournaments in 2013. However, he is on the right track with a win already, and Djokovic is a man of big games. There are a few big games that he has to win to master the great triumph. He has been able to pull a win in tough games before, and if someone can do it, it’s Djokovic. So watch out Rod Laver.
