Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma will be hosting the fourth annual Dobarzynski 5K on Saturday, April 7, with proceeds going to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society and Camp Sunshine.

Registration for the run will open at 8:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 10 a.m. in front of Smith Hall.

Jordan Dean, a junior music education major from Newnan, Georgia, and president of Tau Beta Sigma, helped coordinate the race.

Dean said the race is named after Steven Dobarzynski, a Kappa Kappa Psi brother who passed away in 2002 from leukemia.

“He was in the Sound of the South, and he was a brother for a while, and he really impacted the chapter because he was really happy even though he had this terrible disease,” Dean said.

According to Dean, the race was started to help Dobarzynski’s family pay expenses left behind by his illness.

“Since then, we have raised money for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society,” Dean said.

He said the race will raise money for Camp Sunshine, a camp that “enriches the lives of Georgia’s children with cancer and their families through recreational, educational, and support programs,” according to its website.

“We’re going to donate the money to a scholarship, and then families will be able to apply for that scholarship in order to be given more financial aid when it comes to their bills,” Dean said.

The race will begin and end in front of Smith Hall. The route goes by the chancellor’s house, through McKinley Drive, down George Wallace Drive and back to University Avenue.

“We encourage people to run it because it’s a different route and it takes you through McKinley and up behind the stadium, and you can actually see the work that’s being done on the stadium,” Dean said.

There will be a fun run for children ages 10 and under for $10, and the 5K will be $25. Registration for the 5K includes a lunch ticket and T-shirt.
