Men’s golf tees off in first tournament

The Troy men’s golf team took part in its first tournament of the new year, traveling to Statesboro, Georgia, last weekend to compete in the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate.

The competition lasted from Sunday through Monday and challenged players with high winds, forcing the average scores upward. The average score for the weekend was 78.03 and every hole except the first averaged above par.

Brent Hamm led the Trojans with a fifth-place finish, shooting 75,73,74 throughout the competition.

Hamm finished second in birdie count after posting 13 birdies over the weekend. He was only bested by Dawson Peters’ 14. Peters was the first-place overall player as he shot 70,71,74 for one under.

Troy was next represented in a two-way tie for 14th place as Will McFadden shot 15 over with a 72,80,79.

Ryan Morrison, Bryson Bianco, Mac Suber and George Burch rounded out the lineup for Troy, placing 19th, 23rd, 28th and 32nd, respectively.

Troy saw a wealth of competition as the participating teams included Georgia Southern, Kansas State, Chattanooga and East Tennessee State.

Up next, Troy will travel to Tallahassee, Florida, to take part in the Seminole Intercollegiate at Florida State University. The three-day tournament is set to begin on Feb. 19.
