The Beta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a society for women educators, is opening its annual scholarship competition.
This scholarship is available to undergraduate female students enrolled in the teacher education program.
According to the organization’s website, “The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.”
The Troy University chapter of the society is focusing its attention on assisting new teachers going into the education field by granting a scholarship to two women educators studying on Troy’s campus.
The one-time, non-renewable award’s amount depends on how much the organization raises.
Shannon Thompson, English professor and scholarship committee chair for DKG, said the scholarship serves as a grant to assist teacher education students with resources.
“It is typically several hundred dollars to provide funds for textbooks and other necessary materials for students in the teacher education program,” said Thompson.
Thompson encourages female education students of all levels of teacher concentration, as long as they are accepted in to the Teacher Education Program, to apply.
“We welcome and want teacher applications from all of the primary and secondary fields, from histories to the sciences to apply,” Thompson said. “Everyone is equally welcome.”
To apply, students must email a letter, with contact information included, to the scholarship committee explaining why they wish to be a teacher.
