Armchair discusses Mormon history, controversy

Madina Seytmuradova Staff Writer The Philosophy Society’s weekly discussion group, The Armchair, hosted a presentation about Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon church, on Tuesday. Matt Fulton, a senior music industry major from Tampa Bay, Florida, and a sixth-generation Mormon, prefaced his speech with a disclaimer saying that the point of the event was to present what Mormons believe, not to convert anyone to Mormonism. Rakshak Adhikari Staff Writer The Philosophy Society organized a movie screening of “Trapped” that chronicles the struggles of abortion providers against so-called “Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers” (TRAP) laws legislated by Southern states. The documentary by Dawn Porter was screened on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and was followed by a discussion. Madina Seytmuradova Staff writer Controversial topics and intense competition stirred the debaters and audience members at the “Shockwaves in Bibb Graves” debate between members of the Philosophy Society and the Economics Club on Monday. Each team had the chance to pick two of the five topics suggested by their opponents ahead of the event. The judges then picked a fifth topic that was announced during the event.
