Cano nabs individual title, earns sixth at Henssler Intercollegiate

With the help of Fátima Cano’s fourth individual title this season, the Troy women’s golf team finished sixth at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate on March 28-29.

In her win, Cano beat out Gabby Barker from Texas Tech, the nation’s No. 4 player at the time. Cano did tie, though, with Barker’s teammate Lauren Mason and Augusta’s Josefine Nyqvist.

The No. 99 Trojans tied with No. 87 South Florida for the spot among 12 teams, but they beat out two higher-ranked teams in No. 89 East Tennessee State and No. 74 Old Dominion. No. 26 Texas Tech won the event at the Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia.

In the Trojans’ first round on Monday, March 28, the team tied for fourth place with a cumulative 305. Junior Cano fought for fifth place in the first round with a 1-over 73, and freshman teammate Lindsey Harrison took 12th with a 3-over 75.

Freshman Bianca Lohbauer tied for 30th with a 6-over 78, and junior Gabi Oubre hit two birdies, tying the next spot at 40th with a 7-over 79.

The next round, Troy dropped three spots on the leaderboard. No. 53 Middle Tennessee and No. 87 South Florida both jumped the Trojans by seven or more strokes.

Cano shot a 3-over 75, maintaining her No. 5 spot; Oubre’ jumped to No. 37 with a 5-over 77 and a birdie; and Junior Becca Horner shot a 6-over 78.

Tuesday’s round started early for the Trojans, who ended up shooting the third-best round of the day in a 13-over 301. They jumped a single spot by the day’s end.

Cano shot four birdies, three bogeys and a triple-bogey to finish with a 1-over 73, tied for the third-best individual score of the day.

Lobhauer jumped 15 spots to 26th place with a 3-over 73 and three birdies, and Oubre’ jumped 14 spots 23rd with a 4-over 74 and four birdies. Harrison finished tied for 52nd, Horner finished tied for 54th, and redshirt freshman Antonia Poate tied for 68th as an individual.

The Trojans will travel to Oxford, Mississippi on Friday to compete in the Rebel Intercollegiate. The weekend event will be hosted by Ole Miss.
